According to security officials in Galmudug State, Somalia’s regional forces killed 17 al-Shabab extremists who attempted to attack a local hamlet early Friday.

The terrorists were killed after attempting to capture Baxdo town in central Somalia, according to security authorities who spoke to the state-owned Somali National Television.
“In the early hours of Friday, the regional troops of Somalia’s Galmudug State thwarted an attack by al-Shabab on Baxdo town, killing 17 terrorists,” the television station claimed.

The action comes as Somali forces step up operations against al-Shabab insurgents in the central and southern regions, where the militants still control large swaths of rural areas and perform ambushes and land mines.
